Books I Read in 2021 – February

Vixen Ecology by Gail Carriger is a super short story made available via the author’s newsletter. It’s set in the San Andreas Shifter-universe and ties in with the Parasolverse as well. It was cute and short and bittersweet and filled out one character’s backstory a bit. I’d recommend the first book in that series (The Sumage Solution, and it’s prequel, Marine Biology) but I wasn’t sold on the second and third.

Abroad: Book One by Liz Jacobs was a re-read from 2017 and I still love it so much. It has a big character gallery but Liz manages to give each person time to shine and everyone has their own personality and it feels really authentic. The main cast in book one is Nick, Dex and Izzy and in book two there are a few more in the friend circle who come to the fore. Lovely book about finding yourself and coming to terms with who you might be or become. Fabulous.

Saffron Alley by A.J. Demas is the sequel to Sword Dance that I read in 2018. It’s set in a fictitious Mediterranean world. It reminds me very much of Greece in antiquity. Varazda is back home after events in book 1 and is eagerly awaiting Damiskos visit. They formed their bond and relationship during chaotic events and now that has been resolved they need to figure out if what they felt can lead to something permanent. It’s altogether fabulous and I love it so much and it’s already on my re-read list along with all the other books in this world.

The Longest Night by E.E. Ottoman is a short story about two men who meet after having been penpals for 6 years. Richard is let go from his job and comes to Tobias to have a place to stay over Christmas. It was cute and I enjoyed getting to see trans and intersex people depicted in 1904, living their best life. Also, big cottage core vibes in this and I am so here for it.

Abroad: Book Two by Liz Jacobs is really just a continuation of book one and just as lovely as the first one. You can’t really re-read one and not the other. Still love it.

Something Human, One Night in Boukos and Sword Dance are all by A.J Demas and I love them all to bits. They are all set in the same fictive Mediterranean world of Saffron Alley but Something Human is a bit more stand-alone than the rest. They can all be read in whatever order but do read Sword Dance before Saffron Alley.

The First Snow of Winter is a prequel to Introducing Mr Winterbourne by Joanna Chambers featuring two new characters, Sam and Jasper, who we will see more of in a new part in that series coming in April. It was a short, quick read and very sweet. I wouldn’t have minded if it was a bit more fleshed out but then it would have become a novel (which would have been ok by me but I get it)

The Gentle Art of Fortune Hunting by K.J. Charles – I reviewed this here.

Best Laid Plans by Roan Parrish is book 2 in her new Garnet Run series that started last year with Better Than People which I reviewed back in August. This one gives the stage to Charlie Matheson, older brother of Jack from book 1 and I really liked this one as well. I think I’ve seen that there will be one or maybe even two more in this series – very excited.
