Books I Read in 2021 – July

July was my vacation month and I haven’t read as much as I would have liked. But six books is not bad.

Infernal Affairs by Jordan L. Hawk was a short story originally published in an anthology of monster-hunting tales. This one differs as it ended up more of a rom com. Which I’m not mad about. It was cute and fun and could be a great origin story for a new series .. *hinthint*

Slippery Creatures – K.J. Charles – well, third readthrough of this one and it’s still really good. Even though I know all the twists by now and I can see Kim being a shifty bastard it’s still very enjoyable and I will re-read it again.

A Psalm For the Wild-Built by Becky Chambers was so good. I’ve had it pre-ordered for a while and was happy to get a notice for pick up a few days early. I wasn’t aware that it was going to be a series so that was a happy surprise. At first, I was a bit standoffish because it’s not a Wayfarer-universe book but that’s not really fair to the book so I kept on reading and found it to be profound and thought-provoking. A self-taught tea monk meets a robot in the wild and finds a new purpose in life. I had to catch my breath in places because it spoke to me in ways it wouldn’t have if I had read it even last year. So, so good.

Gilded Cage by K.J. Charles, yet anther re-read of a K.J-book. this is a murder mystery story and the second in the Lilywhite Boys duology. Unusually it features a m/f pair but K.J. does this so well too. I’ve already reviewed it here so I won’t do that again.

Another Time, Another Place by Jodi Taylor is book 12 in the St Mary’s series. It started off a bit slow but finished strong with all the well-known St Mary’s shenanigans that I love so much. Nice bit of escapist nonsense.

The Galaxy, and the Ground Within by Becky Chambers was released in February but the 17 yo nabbed it immediately so I haven’t gotten around to it until now. It was so good – like all the rest in this series. The first book (The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet) is my absolute favourite but I think this takes second place. Everyone is lovely and wants to connect with people. It was really interesting since there weren’t any human main characters. It was really good and I have put it up on my re-read list for later along with the rest of the series.
